Classification
If you aren’t used to the terminology around heavy equipment, you might think heavy duty trucks are just a catchall for semi cabs and the like. While this makes it easy to market trucks in general, there are technical classifications that are important for those working in trucking and other industries.
Trucks of all kind are separated into classes that are then ranked by a number from 1 to 9. A truck isn’t classified as heavy duty until Class 7. Each class is categorized by a weight limit since that’s often the most important factor in trucking and transport. Class 7 trucks are those measured at over 26,000 pounds. The next class up — also classified as heavy duty — is over 33,000 pounds. These heavy duty trucks can reach up to 80,000 pounds in overall weight (which then requires an oversized load designation). Class 9 trucks have a special designation: super heavy duty. They’re specially designed to go places you wouldn’t normally take these kinds of trucks, like the off-highway driving loggers need their trucks to handle.
When to Buy?
Heavy duty trucks are big and expensive, so they aren’t just vehicles everyone should have. While they might be absolutely vital for some companies, businesses, and industries, you should make sure such an impressive piece of equipment is the best use of your capital. For some fleet managers and operators, renting a heavy duty truck is a perfectly acceptable alternative, and long-term leases are extremely common for many transportation groups across the country.
Additional Information
There are a few unique requirements for owning or operating a heavy duty truck. A special license is needed for operators - a Class B. The licensing process involves additional driving practice and testing compared to a Class C license. Fortunately, there are plenty of programs and classes across the country that help drivers get everything they need together.
The Kenworth T680
The T680 is the most highly evolved aerodynamic long-haul tractor ever produced by Kenworth, and if you're in need of a heavy-duty truck, this is the place to start. Advancements in this model include an optimized powertrain, an automated transmission for ease of use, and fuel-efficient PACCAR drive axles. Kenworth Idle Management system phases out the need to run the truck's engine to control the temperature. The T680 features a world-class cabin that rivals some cars on the road, and the ergonomic driving experience reduced driver fatigue, increasing safety and maximizing the time spent in the cab. To top it all off, Kenworth has added real-time reporting technology which lets the driver operate in the sweet spot for maximum fuel efficiency. The T680 really is "The Driver's Truck".
